Custom Transcription Project - 4-Hour Trial (More than 61 pages)
Some transcription projects are simply too large or unique to fit into a set number of hours — a complete family archive, years of correspondence, an estate's full collection of records, or documents in poor condition that require significantly more time to decipher. For projects like these, Family Roots Revealed offers a Custom transcription project, scoped and estimated specifically for your collection.
Reading handwritten family documents yourself can be genuinely difficult. Cursive isn't taught in most schools anymore, and even well-preserved documents can be hard for younger generations to make out. We turn that handwriting into clear, accurate typed text, faithful to the original and legible for everyone in your family.
Our experience spans historic handwriting from the 1700s through the present day, regardless of the size or scope of your collection.
Your finished transcription is delivered as a digital file, so it isn't locked into one format forever. As technology changes over the years, you (or your descendants) can convert, update, or transfer that file, keeping your family's records accessible well into the future, not just readable today.
How It Works:
Estimate Phase: A Custom project begins with our standard 4-hour trial, billed at $300, during which we review your documents and determine the total time your project will realistically require. We'll then provide you with a full estimate before any further work begins. This 4-hour trial includes the 2-hour minimum for transcription services.
Original Documents: If you prefer to send your original physical records, we will carefully transcribe them and return your items safely stored in archival-quality sleeves to help preserve them for the future.
Digital Copies: If you prefer to keep your originals at home, simply send clear, high-resolution photographs or scans of the pages. In this case, you will receive an electronic document (PDF) containing an exact line-by-line transcription.
If you accept our estimate, we continue under a retainer model at our standard $75/hour rate: you'll pay a retainer up front, we draw down against it as work is completed, and any unused funds are returned to you at the end of the project based on actual hours worked after the 4-hour trial period.
Note: While every effort is made to decipher challenging historical handwriting, degraded or severely obscured text or damaged paper may occasionally require bracketed notations where words are illegible or missing.
Please note that during periods when we are working on very large projects, we may intermittently work on smaller projects to keep client work from stacking up.
If you decide not to continue after the trial phase, you'll receive an electronic document via email containing all work completed during those 4 hours.
