Family Roots Revealed's 16-hour transcription project is built for collections at this scale: sizable enough to need real time, but well-defined enough to estimate in advance.
Cursive is no longer taught in most schools, so even documents in good condition can be difficult — or impossible — for younger generations to read. We professionally transcribe handwritten documents into typed text, preserving your family's treasured records so they remain clear and legible for generations to come, with expertise spanning historic handwriting from the 1700s through the present day.
Because your transcription is delivered as an electronic file, it isn't tied to any one format or device. Unlike a single physical copy, digital files can be converted, updated, or transferred by you as technology changes over the years — helping ensure your family's records stay accessible for generations to come, not just readable today.
This tier is a good fit for projects like a lengthy diary or journal, an extended run of letters between family members, or a defined set of documents from a single source — larger than what our 8-hour project covers, but not the open-ended scope of a full family archive.
How It Works:
Original Documents: If you prefer to send your original physical records, we will carefully transcribe them and return your items safely stored in archival-quality sleeves to help preserve them for the future.
Digital Copies: If you prefer to keep your originals at home, simply send clear, high-resolution photographs or scans of the pages. In this case, you will receive an electronic document (PDF) containing an exact line-by-line transcription.
Note: While every effort is made to decipher challenging historical handwriting, degraded or severely obscured text or damaged paper may occasionally require bracketed notations where words are illegible or missing.
Transcription Services are subject to a 2-hour minimum fee. The standard fee for this larger-scale project allows for 16 hours of transcription time. If a project does not require the full 16 hours, any unused balance beyond the 2-hour minimum requirement will be refunded at our standard rate of $75 per hour. Very poor or difficult-to-decipher handwriting may require additional time and payment.
